District 9 Plus Other Tangential Thoughts.

Wow, I know, I’m an idiot. I just watched District 9 after having it for AGES and thought yeah I know how that goes, I’ll get to it. I watched the Neill Blomkamp short way back and was super enticed, a commentary on illegal immigrants but with that of aliens was a great idea. With the whole Halo debacle though and the ‘will they won’t they’ scenario and Life taking over I put the film on hold. How dumb was I. What an amazing film. I feel like I need to spread the Gospel on this film but have been sent to the future into 2010. Really, I can’t say enough about this film. Documentary style, check. Cool Sci-Fi ‘What If?’ scenario, double check. But Damn, it took a turn I didn’t expect and kept running with it and I felt myself shouting at my TV saying things like ‘No, how could do that!’ to ‘Oh my God this is the best ‘Alien’ film I’ve ever seen.’ Truly amazing and just makes me think, If only Microsoft/Bungie green-lit this what could it of been. But that’s totally downplaying what they achieved and overall I’m glad things turned out how they did so they weren’t bogged down by the Halo fiction.

After watching District 9 it immediately made me think of this, which I initially thought on first viewing was a Half-Life fan made vid. (Btw, is that Lost music I hear?) –

And if you haven’t seen, heres the Blomkamp short ‘Alive in Joberg’ that started this process that caught Peter Jackson’s attention. And even Sharlto Copley is in the short playing a short role as a Police Officer and he would later reprise the role as Wikus van de Merwe, the main protagonist in District 9 –

Bionic Commando: ’87 vs ’09

Had this stuck in my head today and as the internet does, linked me on to the original and I realised how different the same song can actually be.

Compare and Contrast

A racing game race start, then turns to Tetris wizardry, then onto Castlevania mansion.

GT Countdown – Top 10 Necessary Sequels

This is a great list and a first for GT ‘Top 10′s’ I agree with every one. Maybe Ultima doesn’t need to be made as it has been done already and was called Oblivion, but I can totally see Capcom putting out a Strider game on XBLA and PSN sometime soon in the vain of Bionic Commando and Mega Man.

So this got me thinking bout games I’d like to be brought back and made sequels of for the current HD gen, so here’s an Unordered List. (when do you ever use those eh? :D )

  • Legacy of Kain – For obvious reasons if you know my gamertag for XBoxLive, PSN and Steam, RazielCuts, Raziel being the main dude from the series. Awesome series of games that slowly went downhill with Soul Reaver being my favourite. Vampire preying soul sucker traversing between the physical world and the spirit world in HD? Yes please!
  • Jet Set Radio – I didn’t play Future but I loved the original on Dreamcast. This game was so me back in the day, graffing, rollerblading (yup I had blades before I had a skateboard, I’m a loser, I know, in my defence though Tony Hawk’s 2 hadn’t been released yet..) the cell shaded art style, the music. This game had major style. This game would look awesome now a la Valkyria Chronicles.
  • XIII – Speaking of cell shaded games, XIII was a great game that nobody bought. I used to love throwing knifes into peoples heads or getting headshots with the sniper rifle to see a 3 panelled comic book animation play out (can be seen here and yes, that voice is Mulder.) Left with a major cliffhanger ending I don’t think anyone remembers or cares about this game anymore and with the vast array of FPS’s out there at the moment to warrant a sequel. Would be nice tho.
  • I’ll add more when I think of them.

Halo 2: Cutting Room Floor.

Really interesting and pretty cool look at what was left behind from Halo 2 with a lot ending up being used in further games down the line.

I feel that the Special Purpose Sniper very much resembles that of the Geth found in Mass Effect. Halo 2 ’04, Mass Effect ’07. Just sayin’ :D

ICP – ‘Miracles’ (Stupid Rapper’s Think They’re Deep).

Some choice lyrics -

“I fed a fish to a pelican at Frisco bay, it tried to eat my cell phone, he ran away”

“Water, fire, air and dirt, fucking magnets, how do they work? I don’t want to talk to a scientist, ya’ll motherfucking lying and getting me pissed.”

Pixels by Patrick Jean

This is just great, makes me want to get back more into 3D modelling. I especially like the Tetris completing a quad and making the building drop down, clever stuff.
